And I want to tell you about the wonderful event that happened when the Monastery of St. Sergius was opened in 1945. It was common knowledge that the Lavra was being opened.
The abbot of the holy abode, Archimandrite Gury (later Metropolitan) received permission from Moscow to serve on the feast, it seems, of the Holy Trinity. But there were no bells on the bell tower to call the service. Then it was instructed to raise a large bell to the bell tower. We put the woods in a hurry, rolled up the winch, pulled the cables and started to raise the bell. But then suddenly the father of the Abbot was summoned to Moscow, and he immediately left.
Workers all day long, raising the bell, and could not lift it to the spot. They tapped the bell ten times and more to the ground, then pulled it up again.
The bell reached half way and did not want to go any further. No power could drag him higher. The cables were steel, there were no knots anywhere, but the bell did not want to go higher. Ten times or more he reached a certain place and stopped as if chained. The workers were exhausted and could not understand the reason for this misfortune.
It was evening, and the abbot was returning from Moscow. He
saw from a distance how the bell was walking slowly, walking - and stopped. He was told that the workers were fighting with the bell all day and could not lift it into place.
Archimandrite Guriy silently got out of the car and quickly headed to his cell. When he entered, he made a prayer and put on his epitrachel, put it on. Then he took a trebnik and read in it the prayer "To raise the bell." Before he could finish this prayer, as with
side of the courtyard there were cheerful cries. The governor glanced at the bell: the latter, slowly and solemnly, was already reaching the window of the bell-tower, where several hands were received and dragged inside. So the bell was raised and Laurel opened.
