Today's Sermon in a Nutshell:
“Citius, Altius, Fortius!”
This is the Olympic motto, which in Latin means, “Swifter, Higher, Stronger!” Yet it could easily be incorporated as a Christian slogan. Because St. Paul utilizes the Olympic Marathon as a metaphor for the Christian way of life, encouraging us to run the race with great endurance, keeping our eyes fixated on the prize. Not a laurel leaf crown or a gold medal, but the very Kingdom of God.
Thus, Christ came into the world not only to offer hope and encouragement, but to coach and train us in how to compete against Satan and sin, pushing us to excel in both body and spirit to become who we were truly created to be: Champions for Christ!
And just as runners need water, ice, and nutrition stations along the long, arduous route, so do Christians. That is why we attend church - so that we might not only glorify God and offer thanks, but recieve the spiritual nurishment, grace, and renewed hope to continue along our path.
Fr. John
