Today’s gospel has our Lord entering the synagogue on the Sabbath and taking His turn reading Scripture. Prophetically, He reads a passage from Isaiah regarding the Messiah. Jesus then goes on to expound upon these verses, claiming that they are now fulfilled through His person. All those present were astonished by what they heard and wondered at His remarks. That they “wondered” meant all were in awe of His presence, and gracious words literally signifies “words of grace;” revealing both the outer and inner character of Jesus Christ.
