“For this reason make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.” (2nd Peter 1:5-7)
In these beautiful almost poetic verses, St. Peter displays for us seven gifts of God’s grace. Yet in order for each of these to fully develop and mature, they must first “grow forth” from a preceding grace – tracing its way back to the actual “root” of faith. In other words, just as the vine cannot produce fruit without the branch and the branch cannot subsist without the stem, and the stem cannot exist without the root, we must first have a solid faith if we ever wish to grow and bear spiritual fruit!
