“They are grumblers, complainers…” (Jude 1:16)

“They are grumblers, complainers…” (Jude 1:16)

Most people don’t enjoy being around those who excessively complain, grumble, or whine incessantly, and apparently neither does God. Sadly, some would rather count their misfortunes over their blessings. Yet St Paul tells us, “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (First Thessalonians 5:18).

Trials, tribulations and temptations are common to all mankind. First Corinthians 10:13 says, “The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.”

But he best advice I can think of to counteract any attempt at being a complainer, grumbler, or negative-nelly come to us from the Prophet Habakkuk who said: “Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will be joyful in the God of my salvation. The Sovereign Lord is my strength. He makes me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights” (Habakkuk 3:17-19).
