“Take my yoke upon you...” (St. Matt. 11:29)
A yoke is a type of harness that went around the necks of donkeys or oxen so that they could pull a cart, plow, or work a mill. Normally these were designed for two animals so that they could work in tandem;
sharing a load that might be considered impossible for one animal to bear alone. Jesus, therefore, uses this term as a metaphor, but with a much deeper meaning. With it He conveys a message of hope to all who are
suffering, lonely, or in despair. For by taking on the yoke of Christ we need not suffer alone as He is willing to share in our troubles and ease all the pain and burdens afflicting us.
Fr. John
