Christ is Risen!

Christ is Risen!

“He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.” (St. Luke 24:35)

In today’s gospel lesson we are told that after the Resurrection, Jesus revealed Himself to two of His disciples through the “breaking of bread.” This statement can and should be taken both, literally and figuratively. Literally, because our Lord did perhaps have a certain means of breaking or tearing the bread in order to distribute it to His disciples at meals, and figuratively, because this term can also refer to a meal itself – and our Lord undoubtedly had a particular method of conducting the order of a meal, beginning with the prayers He used. In both instances, Jesus’ presence was revealed through this familiar, yet unique way in which He led the meal; something Jesus’ disciples had undoubtedly witnessed countless times during the Master’s ministry.

As Christians, we should also be able to recognize Jesus Christ – the Bread of Life, Whose very life was broken upon the Cross as a means to make all of mankind whole before God. Therefore, as you continue to eat your Paschal foods – especially your Kulich or Pascha breads – remember to give thanks for the One Who truly sustains us by His love.
