“And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” (Mark 6:11)

“And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” (Mark 6:11)

Shaking the dust off one’s feet means the same as our modern expression, “I wash my hands of it.” Shaking dust from one’s feet or sandals was a symbolic indication that you had done all you could do in a certain situation, and you therefore have no further responsibilities to act. Thus, Jesus was telling His disciples that they were to preach the gospel to everyone. Where they were received with joy and eagerness, they should stay and teach; but where they were met with closed ears by those who rejected the gospel message, they were to walk away with a clear conscience, knowing that they had done all they could.

As a Church, we are called upon to be apostolic: meaning that each of us must proclaim and deliver the gospel even though these efforts might not always meet with success.

Fr. John
