Q: Why did Jesus wait to begin His ministry until He was 30?
A: Luke’s gospel specifies that “Jesus, when He began His ministry, was about thirty years of age” (St. Luke 3:23). Why did Jesus wait? As Savior, Jesus Christ epitomized the archetypal roles of Priest, Prophet, and King. The latter two, prophet and king, could be undertaken at any age, but the priesthood came with strict age requirements (Numbers 4:47). Therefore, in keeping with the Law of Moses, Christ waited to begin His earthly ministry of service and sacrifice until the age in which the Old Testament priests began theirs.
