“But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” (Mark 10:31)

“But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” (Mark 10:31)

God’s way of thinking is just the opposite of ours. The last shall be first, the weak shall be strong, and the foolish will shame the wise. Thus, it should be no surprise that God’s Son – this New-born King – would enter the world, not born in a palace surrounded by regals, but in a stable filled with animals; that He would be laid, not in a downy, feathery bed with silken pillows, but in a manger – a feeding trough filled with rough hay; and that the “royal decree” of His birth was given, not to ranking notables, but mere shepherds.

This, manger then, became the sign to the shepherds who were sent to search for the Christ-child, the One True Shepherd; for the angels proclaimed: “This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:12). There might have been other babies born in Bethlehem that night, and they may have been wrapped in swaddling cloths, but no other child would have been laid in a manger.

Fr. John
