I absolutely love, and have always loved visiting cemeteries. Growing up in Minneapolis, as children we visited our parish cemetery quite frequently to pray over our loved ones and care for their graves. I used to bike there often to read or walk through its quiet, “park-like” setting. When my wife and I dated, we also would walk there…just as is described in so many Russian novels. In fact, I actually proposed to my wife in that cemetery!
In Cleveland, there are many old cemeteries, the kind with grand, exquisitely-carved headstones. Some are mammoth blocks, others are monoliths, and many have figures such as angels, robed and veiled women in mourning, or perhaps even a statue of the deceased. But my favorite monument is a near life-size statue of the Apostle John atop a pillar – and carved around that pillar is this epitaph from this morning’s epistle lesson:
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.”
Fr. John
