My son is all I have left…

My son is all I have left…

Jacob glanced at the speedometer of his car before slowing down: he has driving with 100 km/p in an area with a speed limit 50 km/h. He stopped the car on the roadside, but not completely out of the traffic stream. He thought that he would let the policeman worry about him blocking the traffic.

The policeman got out of the patrol car. Jacob could not believe his eyes: he was Stephen, whom he had known from the Church! Jacob sank deeper in the car seat. This was worse than a fine: a loyal policeman to arrest a brother from the church and indeed for excessive speeding.

Jacob got out of the car and, while this was not allowed, and approached the policeman, the man who saw every Sunday and had never seen in his uniform.

– Hello, Stephen.

– Hello, Jacob.

– Probably caught me red-handed, I was in a hurry to go to my wife and children.

– Probably, replied the policeman with a single word.

– I have been working until late at the office lately. I’m afraid I was driving a bit fast.

– I understand that you drive fast in general, the policeman said.

Ouch. This was not good. Jacob thought that it was time to change his tactics.

– So, how fast do you thing I was driving?

– 90 km/h. Get back in your car, please, the policeman replied seriously.

– Stephen, please, wait a minute. I checked just before you stopped me. The speed was almost 65 km/h.

– Please, Jacob, get back in.

Jacob, who was angry, got abruptly into the car and forcefully closed the door, standing still and looking forward.

A loud knock on the door made him turn his head. He saw Stephen holding a folded paper in his hand. Jacob opened the window just enough to be able to catch the fine ticket.

– Thank you very much! He could not hold back his irony.

Stephen returned to the patrol car without another word, and Jacob unwrapped the paper he had been given, in order to see how much the fine was. He began to read:

“Dear Jacob,

I used to have a daughter. She was six years old when she was killed by a car. As you have correctly guessed, someone was driving too fast. The driver paid the fine, he spent three months in jail, and then he was released. Free to hug all of his three daughters. I had only one and I have to wait until I die and go to heaven in order to hug her. I tried a thousand times to forgive the man who killed my daughter. A thousand times I thought I had made it. Maybe I did it, but I need it again. Even now. Pray for me. And be careful. My son is all I have left.

Stephen”

James turned his head just the time the patrol car started moving away. He was staring at it until it disappeared. He left himself after an entire quarter, driving very slowly and asking God to forgive him.
