"Yet even now," says the Lord, "return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, with mourning; and rend your hearts and not your garments." (Joel 2:12-13)
During Old Testament times people would often tear or "rend" their garments as a sign of sorrow and remorse. Yet God, speaking through the Prophet Joel, isn't looking for mere external displays, but rather true, heartfelt repentance in which one opens their heart to let sin out and God in.
