Although there were no clocks for telling time, time was still kept by the people during Christ’s time by the “watches” or hours of the day. There were not only considered “periods” of time, but were also incorporated into the liturgical prayer life of the people, which is still continued unto this day, albeit mostly in monasteries.
Without taking into effect the celebration of Divine Liturgy and private prayer, here is a breakdown of the services of the day and their corresponding times. These times are approximate because the service schedule may differ between institutions.
Matins (Morning Service) – 4:30 am
First Hour – 6:00 am
Third Hour – 9:00 am
Sixth Hour – 12:00 pm
Ninth Hour – 3:00 pm
Vespers (evening service) – 6:00 pm
Compline (Before Bedtime) – 10:00 pm
Midnight Office – 3:00 am
Fr. John
