A Russian bishop was invited to bless a new submarine on its maiden voyage. Aftert the service, the captain asked if he would like to come aboard for the weekend and serve liturgy in the chapel for the crew 400 feet below water. The bishop agreed and was excited to perform something that would undoubtedly be a major first in the life of the Church.
Prior to the service, one of the crewmen, who had graduated from seminary, but was doing his mandated military duty, approached the bishop and asked if he could be ordained a deacon during the service. The bishop thought about it and agreed, but thought it prudent to talk to the captain.
Although the captain was sympathetic, he told the bishop that the navy could not allow this ordination to go through as they had a strict rule about sub-ordination.
