“It is written, ‘My house shall be called the house of prayer’…” (Matthew 21:22)
Jesus quotes the Prophet Isaiah (56:7) calling the Temple in Jerusalem a “House of Prayer.” This is because God understood that people needed “structure and physicality” to enhance their whole being in sensory worship. Thus, God directed the building of the Temple as a gathering place for worshippers where prayers would rise like incense from the hearts of the faithful to the presence of the living God. And although we certainly can gather anywhere and worship, we continue to designate structures such as churches for the benefit of worshiping in the House of God.
