Painting "The Secret Eater Monk"
Location: Dochiariu Monastery, Mt. Athos
The painting "The Secret Eater Monk" hangs in the Archondariki (Guests House) of Dochiariu Monastery on Mt. Athos. The Akhondarichos (the monk that on duty at the monastery guests house) said that this picture was painted in our time based on a miracle that happened on Mt. Athos in one of the monasteries. One of the monks who worked in the kitchen stole some food and secretly ate it in his cell in the evening. And one day after the Great Vespers, when everyone was going for supper, in the presence of many brethren, the earth opened and a serpent emerged from the earth, and consumed the soul of the careless monk.
Secret eating is a gluttony sin of eating food at the wrong (secret) time, so that no one sees his or her gluttony.
