“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” (James 4:10)

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” (James 4:10)

If we are brutally honest, each of us at times daydreams about being famous, exalted, honored, recognized for doing something and/or gaining the respect and admiration of others. You might call it the “Secret Life of Walter Mitty Complex,” for it often motivates us to seek after that which is prestigious or leads towards earthly glory, worldly gain, and respect. Yet seeking after such things is vanity and offers only a false sense of hope. Therefore, God asks us to flee from such worldly pursuits and calls upon us to trust Him to exalt us when the time is right without trying to get the glory for ourselves.

Yet, to accept and do this requires humility…great humility. To move forward and not make our daily lives about ourselves, while allowing God to make it about us when He sees fit is difficult, but attainable if we adhere to the mantra: “Humility today, God’s glory forever!”

Fr. John
