Today is the Feast of St Cuthbert and I pray we are all blessed with a spark of his love for Christ - that love that took him down into the dark cold waters of the North Sea; the same love that lifted him up to the Light of the Kingdom.
It is so beautiful and it gives me such strength to see that nothing changes the path to salvation shown to us by Christ. We are all called to follow Him; we are all called to enter the Resurrection through the gates of the Crucifixion.
From St Cuthbert to St Silouan, from one millennium to another, the Saints followed Christ on this same path, and they all found their salvation. They all went down in the cold dark waters of their own hell and they leant to keep their mind focused on their sinfulness without despair.
They all knew that salvation is not achieved by pushing others in their sea of sinfulness, but by focusing on one’s own sin and fighting one’s own unworthiness.
Don’t be afraid this Lent. Go down into those dark waters and see your sin. There is no need to despair, regardless what you see. With Christ in your heart, after the dark, light will always follow; just like after the Crucifixion: the Resurrection always awaits.
Happy Feast Day! May we all be blessed.
