In today’s gospel (Luke 7:36-50) we see the extreme contrasts between Simon the Pharisee and an un-named “sinful” woman. When our Lord arrives, Simon provides no water to wash Jesus’ feet, gave Him no kiss, nor did he anoint Christ with oil – all routine aspects of hospitality during that age. The sinful woman, on the other hand, bathed Jesus’ feet with her tears, continuously kissed our Lord’s feet, and poured upon Him very costly perfume. Although the story ends with a rudimentary lesson about forgiveness and love, it also gives us pause to reflect upon who we chose to associate with and/or allow into our homes.

Do we treat everyone around us with the same respect that Christ did? Is that “Welcome” mat on our doorstep really a Christian-based principle of love, or are we simply being pharisaical? Do we include or exclude those we deem as sinful, broken, or unchurched? The answers to these questions will actually gauge the type of relationship you have with the Lord.

Fr. John
