The Greek word μετανοώ (metanó) is comprised of the preposition "after" and the verb "to know", which literally means: an afterthought, I have changed my mind. In other words, the deed I committed is a mistake, and I will never do it again.
It's similar to what happens to someone intoxicated; his mind is "immersed" (momentarily) into wine and cannot control himself. When he walks, you can see him falling, although the street is straight, and when he speaks he reveals all his secrets. But there comes a time when he sobers up. If he saw a video of himself while intoxicated, he would not recognize himself. He would say, "Did I do such things?" He would be ashamed. It is good that this kind of intoxication does not last long! Imagine a man intoxicated all his life…
There is another, different kind of intoxication which comes from the passions and vices. In this state a man can go all his life as if asleep, never knowing what life is, in all of its fullness, spiritual meaning and divine eternal significance.
