St. Richard, King of Wessex; Pre-schism Western saint +722
Commemorated February 7
St. Richard and his holy family are outstanding examples among Anglo Saxons for the way in which their kings and their families worked at spreading the Gospel in their own lands and overseas. Richard was on a pilgrimage to Rome with his two sons when he was stricken and died at Lucca. Miracles were reported at his tomb and he became greatly venerated by the citizens of Lucca who called him "King of the English".
