Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell: Pentecost

Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell: Pentecost

One upon a time a little boy was flying a kite on a very windy day. The wind was strong and kept making the kite to higher up and further away. Eventually the kite got so high that it was out of sight. Just then a man passed by and saw the little boy holding onto the string. He man looked and looked, but could not see the kite, so he asked the boy, “How do you even know you have a kite up there?” The little boy replied, “Because I can feel it tugging on the string.”

Today we celebrate the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, which also fills the sails of the “Ark of Salvation,” giving it movement and direction. Yet we also celebrate the fact that we, too, have received the “Gift of the Holy Spirit” during our baptism and chrismation. And although we cannot see the Holy Spirit, we should be able to sense its work in our lives; feel the power of its tugging on us. For the Holy Spirit has the ability to change our lives, taking us higher and further into the image of Christ. It also grants us the power to proclaim the Word of God, to do great acts and wonders in Christ’s Name, and to conquer sin and overcome the temptations of this life!

Fr. John
