“And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.” (Mark 1:28)

In our day and age, the pull towards fame and celebrity can be quite overwhelming for many. Actors, musicians, models, and influencers seem to have it all. Therefore, is it any wonder that our youth covet and desire such a lifestyle? But should being a celebrity be an aspiration?

When evaluating whether a desire is right or wrong, we must look at the motivation behind the decision. Is it for me, or for God? Is it selfish, or selfless? Saint Paul reminds us of this in his first letter to the Corinthians: “Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God.” (10:31)

Through His miracles and teachings, our Lord’s fame grew, along with the crowds that flocked to see and hear Him. Yet, Jesus remained humble in nature by giving all credit and glory to God His Father, avoiding earthly celebrity status. He even often “slipped away” to a lonely mountain or across the sea to deter the exaltation of the people.

Fame, fortune, and power are deluded elements of this sinful, fallen world; earthly baubles and diadems sought after in an attempt to satisfy an insatiable thirst. Therefore, we should use Jesus as our model and shun such notoriety and keep our hearts humble.

Fr. John
