Iraq's Christians feel the US and the church have abandoned them

ERBIL, Iraq — For more than a week, displaced families have occupied every inch of St. Joseph’s church grounds. Some have a few belongings they managed to gather as they fled their homes. Others have nothing but the clothes they wore. The line for the church complex’s three toilets is unbearable.

At a press briefing on Thursday, President Barack Obama praised the US military forces participating in humanitarian airdrops for Yazidis trapped fleeing the Islamic State (IS). But he reassured viewers that the need for additional humanitarian drops was probably over and that "the majority of the military personnel" involved would be leaving “in the coming days.” As for the other minorities displaced by IS, including Iraqi Christians, “the situation remains dire," the president said. "We’re going to be working with our international partners to provide humanitarian assistance.” No concrete plans were offered.

For the Christians now in Erbil, the statement won’t offer much comfort. They want to leave Iraq for good. And they fear the international community has forgotten them.

For these families, displacement and violence is nothing new. This is the latest, albeit the most extreme, in a long line of threats to their minority group here in Iraq. But this time they say enough is enough. IS has now pushed many of these families, once determined not to leave their homeland, to call for migration.

“No more Iraq!" shouted one man outside St. Joseph's.

“We have nothing here anymore. We are homeless and penniless. Iraq is over for us. We do not trust this country,” said another.

“The people want to flee from Iraq and that’s it! Enough is enough. How many times do we have to be attacked, displaced, killed. The only thing left is to protect the people that are left. The church is not the stones — the people are the church and we can build a new church anywhere. Not here, not anymore."

As a crowd gathered, others called for European nations to open their borders to Iraq’s displaced Christians, which here in the Christian district of Erbil number more than 100,000. Others called for greater foreign military intervention to defeat IS.

Christians in Iraq have been increasingly targeted by kidnappings, bombings, theft and assassinations since the fall of Saddam in 2003. The power void that followed the US invasion and the ensuing power struggle between Iraq’s ethnic and religious majorities escalated into a sectarian conflict with minorities, like Christians, caught in the middle.

But this latest push by IS into the Nineveh plains, the homeland of Iraqi Christians and other minority groups, has stolen their last relatively safe haven and left these families with nowhere to go.

“We hate violence but we are surrounded by it,” said Heam Marzana as she sat in the church grounds with her children. “We don’t want food, or relief aid — we just want to leave.”

For Marzana’s son Andy, time is crucial. An electrical accident in February left his right leg and hand severely deformed. In June, he was supposed to receive an operation that could save his leg in Mosul. But instead, he ended up homeless and sleeping here.

This is the third time the Marzanas have been displaced and left destitute by Islamic extremists that view Iraq’s Christian minority as infidels. In 2006, at the height of Iraq’s sectarian conflict, Andy’s father was shot in the streets of Baghdad. The family was forced to leave their home at gunpoint. Abandoning everything behind, they fled to Mosul. Last month, IS forced all Christians to leave the city, confiscating everything they owned. Andy and his family fled to Qaraqosh, Iraq’s largest Christian town, but this too was overrun by IS militants last Friday.

“We want to be taken out of this country. Are they waiting for them to butcher us all?” said a family friend as he sat with Andy.

Even here, in Erbil's churches, the welcome has not been overwhelming.

“When we arrived here yesterday, they didn't accept to open the grounds of the church for us,” said Firas, an English professor from Qaraqosh, in an interview last week. “The vicar said, 'You have to receive them. They are homeless, penniless.' So they opened their doors and we slept here in the garden.”

As if on cue, an announcement began over the church loudspeakers.

“I am a religious man,” spoke the voice Firas identified as Father Nicodimous. “What can I do to help you? What can bishops do? What can vicars do? How can you ask a religious man to protect you or to provide for you or to take you out of Iraq? Don’t insult the bishop.”

Firas explained that many had been asking the church for material help and assistance with emigration. Volunteers had provided food for the masses, but only plain rice with tomato paste.

“In our homes we have never eaten something so bad, but here we were queuing to get this food,” Firas said with a laugh of resignation.

Church volunteer Duras said he prepared seven pots of soup and 150 kg of rice for a single meal, but it was still not enough to feed such crowds of people.

Back in the church grounds an argument over immigration or increased strikes against the Islamic State ensued.

“Who is responsible for our protection — everyone promises protection but no one does anything. Either take us out of Iraq or we go back to Qaraqosh and the Iraqi government or the Kurdish forces must come with us. We need protection or immigration,” said one man who gave his name as Tibith.

“No! No! No!” shouted a woman in the crowd. “The Iraqi army can’t protect us. They ran away, the peshmerga ran away. We can only leave. No one can protect us here.”

“Where is the international community?” replied Tibith, as he waved a Bible clenched tightly in his fist. “They are going to open their borders for Gaza, they are ready to offer everything for the Palestinians. But they are bombing Israel too — they are fighting. We didn’t fight, we didn’t bomb, we didn’t kill anybody. Britain, Germany and France they are going to open the borders over there, but they are not looking over here.”

Across the road from the church, a building site has become home to yet more displaced Christian families, including Aziz Yousef, who believes the obstacles to emigration are not only external.

“Politicians and church leaders are making obstacles for us to leave,” he said, adding that France had offered to take Iraqi Christian immigrants but the church in Erbil had blocked applications. “The church is trying to push us to remain in Iraq without giving us anything. Do they want us to be human shields?”

Earlier this week as the US bombed IS targets, a slight ray of hope spread through the church grounds. Local media reported that the Kurdish forces had retaken Qaraqosh and the Christian towns around it. But the information turned out to be false, dealing yet another blow to an already disillusioned people. Those who attempted to approach the Kurdish front lines leading into Qaraqosh found that there is no fighting in the area, and no ground force attempting to secure their homes.

Tabith added that when IS tried to take the city, the Kurdish forces had tried to hold them back. But in the evening they pulled out without warning, leaving the city to be overrun.

“We left like 100 churches and monasteries — what will happen to them now? Are they going to blow them up?” he said.

Overshadowed by the plight of Iraq’s Yazidis and disillusioned with the Iraqi government, the Kurds and the international community, most of these families have lost hope that they can ever feel safe in Iraq again.

“I went to the US and I was amazed at the rights of all — human rights, animal rights, children’s rights and everything submits to law,” Yousef said.

“For us, we are civilized, polite, peaceful but we are persecuted here. We are subjected to violence. We are tired of repeated migration. We just want to settle. We want stability. If that means leaving then we will all leave.“

The World According to ISIS: The Terrorist Army’s Dreams for Islamic Caliphate Revealed in One Map

The terrorists who have taken over much of Iraq on President Obama’s watch and have formed the Islamic State (the terrorists formerly known as ISIS, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria; or as the White House prefers, ISIL, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) have dreams of a regional caliphate on its mind.

Take a glance at what CIA Director John Brennan called the “feckless delusion” of a caliphate that is “never going to happen” (via The Right Scoop):

Walid Shoebat, a scholar on Islam, has translated the map of ISIS’ “ten state solution” for the Middle East, which it plans to achieve over the next decade by removing secular governments in its way.

Shoebat points out the “one of these things is not like the other” takeaway from ISIS’ map: three states have been eliminated and absorbed:

1. Anatolia (Turkey)

2. Kurdistan

3. Gogaz, (C.I.S, which includes Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan)

4. Khorasan (Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and possibly Indonesia)

5. Iraq

6. Sham (Syria, Lebanon)

7. Qinana (Egypt, Sudan and Somalia)

8. Maghreb (which includes Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania)

9. Yemen

10. Hijaz (which includes the Gulf States)

The Balkan states, Spain and other powers on the outskirts of the Middle Eastern mayhem might want to sit up and pay attention: they would be eliminated and absorbed according to this vision.

Interestingly, Shoebat believes that Turkey is angling to rush in as a “savior” and become the ideal Muslim state under a Muslim confederacy of ten states, thereby recreating the glory of the Ottoman Empire.

Allowing jihadists like ISIS and al Qaeda, and other Islamist extremists to gain more power and resources will be damaging for both regional and international security. The killing of women, the murdering of children, the repression of all political dissent, and the control of society by an intolerant religious order – these are things that all rational human beings can stand against.

Or should we just write it off as “multicultural diversity”? Europe and America, you are now on the clock – and it happens to be a ticking time bomb.

Dear People, 

This is the vision that the Russian Monk Anthony saw in 1970.  It is truly frightening and I wondered whether or not I should share it with the world but the details are so startlingly accurate as to what is happening today, I felt prompted to share it with you.  Wars and rumors of wars are happening all over the world.  Christians are being martyred in such great numbers that one would think that we are living back in the first two centuries of Christianity.  There are many people who believe that the third world war has already begun in the Ukraine.  Holy men and women have prophesied that it will be the spark that will eventually engulf the Middle East and North Africa.  Same sex marriage has become an accepted part of our social structure.  In reality the legalization of same sex marriage is the legalization of sodomy.  The Christian Church in the Western world is being marginalized by the secularists to the point that the Church’s impact upon society is being diminished with every passing day.  The leaders of the Christian Church are being forced to speak and act in a way that is politically correct in order not to offend the secularists that are dominating our social life.  I ask you to read carefully this vision of Monk Anthony and see for yourselves how startlingly accurate it is in view of what is happening in our society today.  May God have mercy on our souls.

THIS IS THE VISION OF THE RUSSIAN MONK ANTHONY

“This is the vision that I was allowed to see by the Grace of God. First of all, there are various kinds of technological developments that humanity has made which are wrong. These technologies are wrong and satanic because they violate the laws of God.  These developments are wrong because they will become useless for us in the future.  Planes will begin to fall from the skies. Ships will begin to sink.  Nuclear power stations and chemical factories will begin to blow up.  All of these things will happen during catastrophic natural disasters which will ravage all nations of the world, the first of which will be America.  These catastrophes will be brought about by powerful storms, earthquakes, intense draughts and great cataclysms. 

Gangs of thieves will roam the streets of our cities and their lawlessness will go unpunished.  The farms will be polluted with toxic rains and will suffer from intense draughts to the point that they will not be able to produce their crops.  Large herds of animals will die and the people will not be disposed to bury their bodies.  The animals will remain unburied and their decaying bodies will pollute the air.  In order to survive cannibalism will become a common practice amongst people.  

All morality of our civilized society will be trampled upon.  Satan has attempted many times in the past to bring about a universal uprooting of civilized moral law.  But, in the past, he has always encountered the Church hindering his every effort to do this.  The powers of darkness fear very much the denunciations of the Church. This is why, when the Light of Truth no longer shines forth in the world, then diabolical powers will become more powerful.

I saw that evil will spread throughout the world and it will defame the Christian Church which is the spotless Body of Jesus Christ.  This effort will first start with the media attacking the teachings of the Church.  This defamation of the Church will take place in newspapers, on radio and television.  Especially the Orthodox Church and Orthodox Christians will be derided and laughed at.  The Church services of Orthodox Christians and their religious practices of fasting, prayer and confession will be ridiculed.  They will make fun of all things Christian and all things that make up the Christian way of life.

Unbelievable catastrophes will enter the life of the Orthodox Church.  This will happen through its very clergy, its bishops and priest.  In spite of their outward appearance of piety, their spirit will be one of enmity and unchristian behavior. Because of this attitude the faithful will distance themselves from the Churches.  This will especially happen in those Churches that are administered by unchristian clergymen.  Because of this unchristian spirit, newly renovated and newly built Churches will become empty. 

In addition to this, priests that are faithful to their calling will be persecuted. They will be hunted down and defamed by their enemies.  The efforts of the demons will get to the point where priests will be killed.  This will happen when Jesus sees that the pious bishops and priests are prepared to receive the crown of martyrdom.  During that time of Christian persecution there will be many faithful Christians who will become martyrs.
One of the freedoms that the arrogant demons will attempt to establish at that time will be people’s right to live immoral lives.  It is unfortunate to state that even today people have accepted immorality as a way of life. 

One of the freedoms that demons want people to follow is the freedom of living licentiously.  It is unfortunate to state that people have already accepted to live this way.  Immorality has been accepted as an important part of a contemporary lifestyle. Adultery will no longer be looked upon as sin but as an expression of sexual freedom.  A corrupted lifestyle will be encouraged from a very young age.  It will be promoted as sex education, as an integral part of our culture.   Young children will be shown naked bodies indulging in sex.  This will be done to inflame their lascivious passions and then they will be taught that this is simply an expression of their physiological instincts.  The news media and television will be filled with naked bodies showing evil scenes of adultery.

In spite of all this happening and the acceptance of adultery as normal behavior, this will not be enough for the demons.  Sodomy and pedophilia will be promoted as the ultimate expression of freedom.  The propaganda celebrating these sinful acts will acquire great acceptance in the world.  In fact, it will become more accepted than simple sexual immorality.   The issue of homosexual marriage will receive such acceptance in our society that it will rival the discovery of life-saving antibiotics.

The sin of sodomy will become an accepted lifestyle.  At the beginning, it will be accepted by movie stars and then by the politicians.  The sin of sodomy will become the sign of the times.  These expressions of wanton and unbridled immorality have already been accepted and practiced in the annual homosexual festivals throughout America.  All of these unfortunate practices will also become a part of the Russian scene. It will be something not less than an unsightly expression.

All of us who oppose these demonic influences of immorality will be considered individuals who are interfering with the freedoms of other people.  We will be considered uneducated, enemies of the state and its well-being. All the nations will have as their ultimate goal the protection of demonic freedom in place of moral Christian values.

The Grace of God has allowed me to see this vision.  In this vision I also saw how our youth will come under the influence of Satan because of the acceptance of immoral behavior.  The youth will become drunk with alcohol and narcotics.  They will become helpless in the face of this onslaught from hell and they will seek release by committing suicide.  As a result of all this happening there will be large numbers of suicides.  The numbers will be so great that they will eventually not surprise anyone.   It will become an accepted part of modern life.

I know that I have frightened you to a very high degree.  But believe me that it is even more frightening to watch this vision unfold before you.  That which I saw was even more fearful and evil than that which I was able to describe in words.” 

This was an excerpt from a book that talks about the conversations and teachings of the Elder Anthony in 1970.  We hope that the revelations of this prophecy will not lead you to despair about the future but on the contrary that it will inspire you to become more zealous in the fulfillment of the teachings of Jesus Christ.  It is only in the Lord Jesus Christ that we will find the road to salvation.

Our salvation is only found in the Lord Jesus Christ.  This is expressed in the Divine Liturgy when the priest prays: “I love you Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer.”

Διακρινόταν για την βαθειά της ευλάβεια στα πράγματα της εκκλησίας , την υπομονή και το φίλεργο. Προερχόταν από έναν άγιο πατέρα, τον οποίο οι συμμορίτες έπνιξαν στο Αιγαίο, κρεμώντας στον λαιμό του μεγάλη πέτρα, γιατί είχε γιο στον στρατό. Μετά από μέρες βρέθηκε το λείψανό του όρθιο στην θάλασσα, όπως του αγίου Κοσμά του Αιτωλού. Ήτανε μάννα πέντε παιδιών. Δεν κάθισε ποτέ στο τραπέζι να πιάση ψωμί, χωρίς κόπους και ιδρώτες. «Γέροντά μου» και «Θεόκτιστέ μου» ήταν οι προσφωνήσεις της. 

Το αγαπητικό αυτό «μου» ήταν πάντα κάτω από την γλώσσα της. Ο σύζυγος, κομμάτι σκληρός και μεμψίμοιρος , δεν άφηνε περιθώρια για πολλές χαρές.

Κάπου – κάπου μας έπαιρνε και κάποιο τηλέφωνο.

-         Τι κάνεις , κυρα- Σταυρούλα;

-         Προσπαθώ να αναπληρώνω τα υστερήματα, τα κενά της νύφης, για να μην οργίζεται ο πεθερός και δημιουργήται παροξυσμός στην οικογένεια.

Όταν κάποτε ο αδελφός της προσπάθησε να την πληγώση, του έδωσε την απάντηση των Αγίων.

-         Έμαθε και γράμματα ο γυιός σου, αλλά, αδελφή μου, τι έγινε; Καλογεράκος. Μήπως έγινε δεσπότης;

-         Άκουσε, αδελφέ μου∙ το δικό μου το παιδί ήταν άξιο να γίνη μοναχός.

Καύχημα ήτανε για την κυρά- Σταυρούλα πως ο γυιός της ήταν μοναχός και παντού το διεκήρυττε:

-         Έχω και γιο μοναχό στο Άγιον Όρος.

Όταν καθόμασταν κατ’ ιδίαν, μου εκμυστηρεύετο:

-         Πολλές βολές την νύχτα ξυπνώ και αναρωτιέμαι: «Άραγε αυτά τα παιδιά έχουνε να πορευθούνε; Εγώ απόψε έβαλα κουτάλι στο στόμα μου∙ αυτά πως πορευθήκανε;».

Χρόνια οι χυλοπίτες και ο τραχανάς ήταν δικά της παρασκευάσματα και ευλογίες στο μοναστήρι, μαζί με τα ξερά σύκα για την Σαρακοστή. Κι εμείς οι μοναχοί θέλουμε κάποτε-κάποτε ν’ ακουμπούμε στην θύμηση κάποιας ταπεινής μάννας.

Είχε διάκριση και ντροπαλότητα σαν να ήταν μικρή παιδίσκη. Ήρθε μια νύχτα με τον σύζυγό της στο κονάκι , στην Θεσσαλονίκη και προτιμήσανε να μείνουν όλη την νύχτα πίσω από την πόρτα, να μη μας ενοχλήσουν.

Η τραχειά ύπαιθρος με την σκληρή δουλειά αγιάζει. Μας έδωσε πολλές φορές τρυφερώτερους και γλυκύτερους ανθρώπους από τα σαλόνια και τα σπουδαστήρια των μεγάλων πόλεων. Γι’ αυτό , με όλη μου την καρδιά μπορώ να φωνάζω και να παιανίζω: «Χαίρε έρημος∙ χαίρετε , δάση και βουνά, πλαγιές και κορφοβούνια, για τα καλά σας θρέμματα».

Celebrations of 700th Anniversary of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Pakistan

With the blessings of His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, St. Michael the Arch Angel Orthodox Mission in Pakistan celebrated the 700th Anniversary of St. Sergius of Radonezh on 18 August 2014 at Sergius Orthodox Church in Sargodha Pakistan with full zeal and zest.

The solemn celebration opened with the procession followed by the festive Divine Liturgy. A prayer was held in the honour of St. Sergius of Radonezh and certain other prayers for the health of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia, His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad,  for the orthodox clergy, faithful and for all over the world for peace, unity, brotherhood and solidarity.

The faithful entered the place of worship holding banners and the Icons of Jesus, Mother of God and St. Sergius. During the procession the faithful chanted Psalms and the song of the Holy Theotokos. The faithful with great honour and joy laid flowers and lit the candles to the Icon of St. Sergius.

One of the banners displayed the national flags of Pakistan and Russia to mark the spiritual unity with the Mother Church. The other banner displayed prayer and intercession from the Blessed Holy Father St. Sergius, for peace and reconciliation in the world. On the other banner some words were printed to depict and honour the ascetic life of St. Sergius in the monastery.

After the Divine Liturgy Fr. Joseph shared thoroughly the life history and wonder works of St. Sergius.  Fr. Joseph told the faithful that the ascetic life of St. Sergius teaches us hard labour, self-deprivation, humility, simplicity, obedience and patience in all circumstances and when we face hard times and sufferings in our lives. He emphasized the faithful to read the Sacred Scripture to get the strength and blessings from God by quoting the example from the life of St. Sergius. “Blessed father Sergius diligently read the Holy Scriptures to obtain knowledge of all virtue; in his secret meditations training his mind in a longing for eternal bliss”. He further shared that Prince Demetrius of Moscow received blessings from St. Sergius and got victory over the Tartars and success in the battle of Kulikovo, 1380. He added that St. Sergius was not only the saint of orthodox but of the whole world. Fr. Joseph shared in that St. Sergius lived a life equal to that of angels. He was deemed worthy to converse with the bodiless powers while yet dwelling in the flesh. It was further told that when the holy father served the Divine Liturgy, the angel of God concelebrated with him, according to the testimony of his disciples Isaacius the Silent and Macarius who were trustworthy men and perfect in virtue. Fr. Joseph concluded the solemn event saying that St. Sergius is not only the saint of Orthodox Church but of the whole world. Glory to God! Glory to Jesus! We are blessed that we have St. Sergius Orthodox Church in Pakistan.

Then the time was given to the orthodox faithful to express their feeling and testimonies, how St. Sergius brings light comfort to their lives and families.

1-     Aaron Nadeem: He shared that he is the member of Orthodox Church from the beginning and was curious to learn about St. Sergius, so he started reading about the life of St. Sergius through different sources. He said that he is deeply moved by the simplicity and love of the Holy Father St. Sergius.

2-     Mrs Rehana  Saraphina: She shared with pleasure that her children love St. Sergius very much and her family learnt patience and trust in Jesus Christ in poverty through this Holy Saint.

3-     Mrs Nina Helena: She shared cheerfully that she has placed the small Icon of St. Sergius at her home and she firmly believe that she received blessings and prosperity through the constant prayer to the St. Sergius. She said Glory to Jesus!

4-     Furrkh Finnian: He shared that St. Sergius gives strength to me in my weakness. He said that once Fr. Joseph shared that the most holy mother of God appeared to St. Sergius and from then his love and prayer to the Mother of God is increased.

Festive food was shared at the closing of the celebration which was joyfully offered by the family of Ch.Tahir Naveed (Chairman Pakistan Minorities Alliance). It was a large gathering consisting of orthodox faithful and those who wish to embrace the holy orthodoxy in future. There was good number of women and children.

Άξιον και πρέπον, αλλά και χρέος μας είναι να ακολουθήσουμε το παράδειγμα των απελθόντων εις τας αιωνίους Μονάς, Πατέρων και Διδασκάλων μας, Αυτών οι οποίοι έγιναν στα χέρια του Θεού τα όργανα εκείνα τα οποία συνετέλεσαν εις την διδασκαλίαν, την καλλιέργειαν και την σφυρηλάτησιν, θα έλεγα, ημών των νεωτέρων.

Οι συμβουλές των, η διδασκαλία των αλλά και πάνω απ' όλα το παράδειγμά των έγιναν η δύναμις εκείνη που άλλαξε τον ρουν της ζωής μας. Μας πήραν από την αμαρτία, την αμάθεια και το κακό και μας ωδήγησαν στον δρόμο της σωτηρίας. Ας είναι αιωνία η μνήμη των. Και ας πρεσβεύουν και για μας.

Αναφέρω εδώ τα ονόματα ωρισμένων Πατέρων και Διδασκάλων από εκείνους οι οποίοι συνετέλεσαν εις τον πνευματικόν καταρτισμόν και ημών και πολλών άλλων πατρινών και πέραν μάλιστα της πόλεως:

ΟΣΙΟΜΑΡΤΥΡΕΣ ΤΟΥ 21 ΑΙΩΝΑ

Πολύ σύντομα η πρόρρηση της γερόντισσας για επικείμενο μαρτυρικό θάνατο θα επαληθευτεί.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα την 23η προς 24η Απριλίου του 2007, Δευτέρα προς Τρίτη πρωί , αδίστακτοι κακοποιοί σπάζουν την πόρτα του κελλιού της Γερόντισσας και υποβάλλοντας σε διάφορα μαρτύρια την Γερόντισσα Μακρίνα και την αδελφή Μακαρία, τις παραδίδουν στα χέρια του Θεού ,αφού κατάφεραν με μαξιλάρι να τις στραγγαλίσουν…
μετά τα φρικτά βασανιστήρια, αφήνουν τη ψυχή τους να πετάξει στα ουράνια σκηνώματα και να ακουμπήσει η ψυχή των στα χέρια Εκείνου, Τον οποίο επιθύμησαν και ποθήσανε από την νεότητα τους.
