A little boy was going door to door selling pictures he had drawn for ten cents each. At one house, a man asked the boy what he was going to do with the money. The little boy answered: "I'm raising a million dollars for the Red Cross to go towards earthquake relief."
The man chuckled and said, "Wow! A million dollars! Do you expect to raise that much money all by yourself?"
"No," he replied with confidence, "my brother is helping me."
We can all appreciate this young man's sincerity, determination, and altruistic efforts, even if we might have misgivings as to the vastness of his vision and the probability of collecting so much. Yet who knows, God may actually choose to miraculously multiply those few coins he collects; maybe someone that he approaches will be so impressed by this young boy's unselfish quest that he will give a gift large enough to make a real difference. That's the way God most often operates in this world – whether it be multiplying five loaves and two fish to feed a multitude or accepting the widows mite into the temple treasury. God can take our gifts, no matter how small or meager, and multiply them for a greater good and a bigger purpose.
As stated in the Book of Proverbs: "Trust in God with all your heart, and do not rely on your own reasoning." (Proverbs 3:5)
Fr. John
