Sheep naturally need a shepherd to lead, watch over, and protect them; protect them from predators, thieves, and even from themselves. Besides wandering off and getting lost, sheep are also in danger of being what is known as "cast down." Because of their body shape, sense of equilibrium, and short legs, if a sheep were to lay down and then roll onto its back, it has great difficulty in righting itself - much like an upside down turtle. And when this occurs, blood flow ceases, gases build up in the system, and a sheep can literally die within hours.

We are also in need of a shepherd to lead, watch over, and protect us for we too are stalked by predators, in danger of getting lost, or falling over and feeling that we can never right oursleves.

Thank God we have Christ, our Good Shepherd, Who continues to watch over us with pastoral love and merciful compassion - guiding us by His gentle, soothing voice.

fr. John
