PENTECOST.
In the Orthodox Church, Pentecost is also known as “Trinity Sunday,” in honor of the Holy Trinity: God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Western Church also celebrates Trinity Sunday, but does so on the first Sunday after Pentecost.
The word “trinity” does not appear in Scripture, yet it is taught in Matthew 28:16-20 as Christ instructs His disciples to baptize all nations in the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Because of the concept and nature of the Trinity, we can never completely understand fully God’s being, though its doctrine is clearly taught in the Bible. And since the understanding of all Scripture is dependent upon the Holy Spirit, it is somehow appropriate that this mystery is celebrated on the Feast of Pentecost, when the outpouring of the Holy Spirit first occurred.
Fr. John
