Opening the way for God

Let us pin ourselves down and stand before God. Shall we stand before God as sinners? Yes, let us be sinners and stand before God as such, that’s not the issue. Shall we stand before God with our weaknesses, which are a lot? Again, that’s not the problem. Shall we stand before God with our wings broken? It doesn’t matter how we stand before God. Once we are alive with our eyes wide open, once we have some contact, some communication with God and can say the prayer “Lord, have mercy”, the grace of God will make saints out of us. What prevents the grace of God from coming, what really blocks its way, are the excuses we make up and the “tantrums” we throw.

When, in a healthy way, you blame yourself, the more you go against your whims, the more alive your true self becomes.  “Hit” without mercy. Blame yourself without mercy but in a healthy, not an unhealthy way.

 Archimandrite Symeon Kragiopoulos (†)

Τhe feeling of God’s presence.

Can’t we apply something of the Gospel? At least we should humble ourselves!

“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me”. If you pay attention to the meaning of these words, you will humble yourself, become honest and sincere before God.

You wake up in the morning? Don’t only think that up until the previous night nothing had happened with you, that you had failed completely, but say instead: “Today a new day has dawned. Hereby, my God, I am making a new start. I am coming to you. Today I am coming back to you. Take me under your wing”.

From the minute you wake up to the minute you go to sleep, and from the minute you go to sleep to the time you wake up, you should have this feeling: the feeling of God’s presence. That’s what God wants: our heart and our whole being turned towards Him. That’s what pleases God.

 Archimandrite Symeon Kragiopoulos (†)

“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me”

“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me”

Christian is the person who lives in Christ so much, in whom Christ lives so much, that he no longer lives, but Christ lives in him. And he can say, “I have the mind of Christ, have the spirit of God and love you in the bowels of Jesus”.

It is God who arranges things, gives the calling, grants gifts, sheds His light and strengthens. And we’re accountable only to God. Everyone, where he was called to, should do whatever he has to do out of love for everyone and for the glory of God.

All gets clear, when we begin by saying, “God knows, God makes no mistakes. God allowed and arranged things in His economy, both generally and for everyone, in such a way that things couldn’t have been any better”

When the bitter cold pierces me, I start saying the Jesus Prayer and a sweet warmth spreads in my entire body. When hunger begins to overcome me, the Jesus Prayer makes me to forget my wish for food. When pain of rheumatism spreads in my back and legs, I focus on the Jesus Prayer and do not feel the pain. If someone harms me, I think immediately “How sweet is the Jesus Prayer” and the injury or the anger move away and disappear. God knows what a great thing had happened to me the sinner.

Apocalyptic times ......

Love toward Christ demands sacrifices. And truly the ancient Christians were subjected to sacrifices who, during the persecutions of the first three centuries suffered numerous severe trials, and, the Christians of subsequent centuries, even till today, suffered with fortitude martyrdoms of equal force with those of the ancients (Neo-martyrs under the Turkish Yoke, Christians under the previous Block, Orthodox Serbians, and others).

But in the end times it seems that the persecution will be even more clandestine. In order not to be regarded by the common opinion as cruel and merciless persecutors, so that neither their victims can draw sympathy, the persecutors will slaughter “with white gloves,” according to the common saying. Now they will not send forth irrational beasts and swords and flames and torture racks, because they know that these things render the persecuted ones sympathetic. They will utilize other methods with which – though in reality they will be persecuting – no sense whatever of threat or fear will be created. Quite the opposite, their weapon will be the bait. The Christian world will be enticed by the things they offer in order to follow them. Besides, we see also during the early persecutions that the persecutors utilized not only threats (tortures, executions) but also the enticements (promises, gifts, comforts, honors).

If the faithful were then primarily in danger from the threats, it seems we are now more in danger from the enticements.

All of us have a Cross

All people have a cross to carry. There is no man in this world without a cross. Those who met Christ from the time of their childhood have for their Cross, the Cross of our Christ. Those who met Jesus and have repented on behalf of their previous life, have a cross, the cross of the good and penitent thief. And those who have met Jesus and have not received Him, have in their life the cross of the unrepentant thief. So we all have our cross. Everyone carries his cross and ascends his own Golgotha (the hill outside Jerusalem on which Jesus was crucified), the Golgotha of his personal life.

From the homily: “A Few Flowers from The garden of Saint John of Sinai” by Archimandrite Chrysostom, Abbot of the Holy Monastery Saint Nikodimos the Hagiorite

The perfect child

If we have very little faith, then we are distressed and sad. One of the great benefits of faith is to be free of worries and sadness.

For example, when a child knows that there is a father who takes care of the house and provides for him, then every sadness ends quickly with a song. However, if the child becomes an orphan, then there are no songs but only worries, distress, and sadness which surrounds the lonely child.

Practically, a lot of faith leads to less worries, but perfect faith leads to complete happiness. Moses and the Prophets were following God like children that follow their father. They only had problems when they were losing their trust in God and were loaded with worries and concerns.

Jesus was the perfect child with complete devotion, obedience, and trust towards the Father.

– Μα τώρα είναι νηστεία, πώς μπορώ;

New Testimonials About St. Gabriel (Urgebadze)

In our unpredictable lives, important events often happen that give us joy, but over time, they are to some extent given over to oblivion. That’s how it would have been with me, if not for the evening of June 13, 2018. Some friends and I were sitting in a gazebo in a vineyard in Elder Gabriel’s native village of Kakabeti, recalling various stories from the saint’s life. There was such joy in our hearts that we all felt that Fr. Gabriel was with us. My friend said there is probably not a single believer in Georgia who does not feel the help and support of Elder Gabriel. “Indeed,” I said automatically, and began to recall and tell a story that happened to me several years ago.

It was the fall of 2004. Fall is a holiday in Georgia, especially in Kakheti, in the cradle of vines and wine. There is always a lot to do in the village, and I would try to help my father who rejoiced at my diligence and interest in winemaking. I was eleven then. Those were the years when everyone lived hard and tried to help their friends and families as they could. And I tried: I worked in the vineyards and helped people with various tasks. I was unloading watermelons that fall. At one point, the man who handed us the watermelons from the truck threw a large one down carelessly. I caught it, but three seconds later I was writhing in pain. Afraid my parents would be nervous and take me to the hospital, I hid what happened from my family, but a few days later, my parents found out about everything.

As I remember, the doctors examined me and said I had a floating kidney, prescribed me a treatment, and sent me home. The days passed, but the pain did not subside. At some point I noticed by the icons a bottle of holy oil from Elder Gabriel’s grave and remembered how they had told me during a tour that this oil works miracles because it’s from the grave of a holy man by the name of Gabriel. Then, as I recall, they showed us the grave and a photo of the saint we were talking about. I remember looking at Fr. Gabriel’s photo for several minutes and wanting to hug him. So I decided to apply the oil to the sore spot. This was in the evening. Then I immediately went to sleep. The next morning, I didn’t feel any pain, but in my own stupidity, I didn’t even think about why my kidney pain had stopped.

The whole day I ran and played, and in the evening I went up to the icons again and took the oil from Elder Gabriel’s grave. I wanted to put the oil on the already-recovered kidney, when suddenly I said, “No, Fr. Gabriel, I won’t bother you anymore; you’ve already helped me.” I stopped dead, having realized why my kidneys stopped hurting.

It turns out I had said this  phrase so loudly that my parents heard everything and came into the room. Without a word, they understood what happened, and we all stood together to thank God and Fr. Gabriel for his help.

The next day, they took me to the hospital for an examination. No floating kidney! The doctors were amazed, and our eyes welled-up with tears of joy in awe of the great elder.

Time passed, and I became closely connected with Samtavro Monastery and St. Gabriel. It was a great joy for me to participate in making a film about the elder. From the moment I started going to the shooting in Samtavro Monastery, I witnessed more than one miracle worked by the venerable father.

We recorded the monastery’s spiritual guide Archimandrite Lazar (Gagnidze) for the film. He finished his recollections saying he could feel the presence of Elder Gabriel, then he blessed us and headed for the chapel exit, when the doors suddenly opened on their own. Then Fr. Lazar turned to us and said, “You see, Batushka opened the door himself. I told you he’s here! And don’t be surprised even if you happen to bump into him on the street and he greets you.” We smiled. It was an incomparable feeling.

A month passed and we went to Moscow with some of the elder’s sacred objects for a presentation of the book The Elder’s Diadem.

Our Moscow friends came to see us on December 26. In the evening we shared various stories and planned where to celebrate the Nativity of the Lord. One friend asked me whether we can eat fish during the fast. My friend George Abaiadze and I answered that after December 25 and before Nativity we’re not supposed to. “But why?” he asked us, so George and I decided to show our “deep knowledge” of the rules and spent twenty minutes telling our friends why it’s not permitted to eat fish, and we guided them towards the right path.

The next day we took the relics to the church and stayed until late. We were a pleasant tired and we went home. Everyone went to sleep except George and I. “Let’s have some tea,” I offered and put the pot on the stove. I wanted something to eat with the tea, and I opened the fridge and saw a plate of fried shrimp. I grabbed the plate and George and I were happy to give them a try. We enjoyed the shrimp so much that we forgot about the tea. We ate well and soon went to sleep.

That night I had a dream. I was at Samtavro Monastery and Elder Gabriel was coming out of his cell. Everyone approached him for a blessing. Batushka suddenly said loudly, “Who can go to the store?! I can’t imagine the Nativity Fast without shrimp! Someone bring me fried shrimp!” He continued talking about how much he likes shrimp, and I was getting redder and redder! I opened my eyes and heard George laughing because he had had the same dream.

So that’s how Fr. Gabriel rebuked us, the all-knowing and “deeply-believing!” And I noted that I was not surprised at all after this dream, having a feeling only of contrition and joy. This joy always overwhelms you, when you have spoken with Elder Gabriel or he with you!

How I wanted to ask him so many things during the dream, but some power did not allow me to do so… The elder just tells you what you need to hear.

I often think about what I would say to Elder Gabriel if I were to meet him for real, not in a dream, and the same thought always comes to me: I wouldn’t be able to utter a single word before him, except to softly whisper, “I LOVE YOU!” And that is because God, to Whom the elder dedicated his entire long-suffering life, is LOVE.

HOW ST. NICHOLAS WORKED THROUGH AN ELDER’S BOOTS, AND OTHER STORIES

Olga Rozhneva

Dmitry and Natalia Volodikov live in the village of Kamenka, not far from Optina. Dmitry is a seminarian and altar server, and his wife is a choir director. They built a church in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in their village. These stories are about the saint’s speedy aid to those finding themselves in difficult situations, and about how an elder’s boots can prove to be an excellent remedy—however, you won’t be able to buy them.

The story of the elder’s boots

With God’s help, we built a church dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in our village of Kamenka, not far from Optina. Vladimir Chikhikov helped with the construction. He and his wife Elena are hardworking, responsible, responsive, and kind people. Volodya had also helped Elder Schema-archimandrite Iliy (Nozdrin) with the construction of the monastery in Klykovo.

Once, several years ago, Vladimir was helping with some construction being conducted by some of the elder’s spiritual children. Vladimir is both a mason and a carpenter—a real Jack-of-all-trades. It’s just that his feet began to hurt very badly. They ached and ached. Neither ointments nor folk remedies could help. He didn’t tell anyone about it, but simply endured it.

Elder Iliy came to the construction site one day, went into the nearly-finished building, took off his boots, and told Volodya:

“Your feet hurt—take my boots. Wear them for your health!”

Volodya was shocked: How did the elder know about his pain? He put on the boots, and as he wore them, his feet stopped hurting.

Other construction workers found out about this story and must have told someone, because one evening a businessman knocked on the Chizhikovs’ door. Volodya opened, and the man said from the threshold:

“Look, $100. Sell me the elder’s boots!”

Vladimir was stunned and couldn’t muster a word.

“What, not enough? Here’s $200 and the boots are mine.”

Volodya only shook his head.

“Fine! Here’s $200 and I’ll buy you three pairs of new shoes—any ones you want!”

“Forgive me, but the boots aren’t for sale.”

I later asked him why he wouldn’t sell them, and he said:

“If he had just said his feet hurt and had asked for the boots, I would have given them to him. But, you see, he wanted to bargain right away. But for me, these boots are not a commodity.”

The ever-memorable Optina hierodeacon Iliodor never simply passed by our church. He greatly loved St. Nicholas. He would always stop by with his spiritual children to bring fresh and very beautiful roses. He would place red ones at the icon of the Savior, white at the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, and always a beautiful bouquet for St. Nicholas.

He would stop by the kiosk where we bake and sell pies, tea, pancakes, honey from our own apiary, cheese, cottage cheese, sour cream, and other homemade products, with the funds going to the church. Fr. Iliodor loved tea with sea buckthorn jam. He would usually buy pies and treat everyone who happened to be around. If there were men working near the church, he would treat them with pies and give them 1,000 rubles1 too. He was a generous soul and loved to make people happy and help them. If someone gave him something in the morning, he’d have already given it away by evening.

One day, he and I had tea together, without any other people, surprisingly, and he told me a story. He urgently needed to go to Mt. Athos to fervently pray at the holy sites. What was so important, what he wanted to pray about—he didn’t tell me. He only mentioned that he only had two days to spare: He left Friday evening, and he had to return to Optina already by early Monday morning.

On Saturday afternoon, he was standing on the pier at Ouranopoli, waiting for the boat to Mt. Athos, and the Greeks were just shaking their head—the last boat had already left, and no one else was getting to Athos that day.

Fr. Iliodor was walking along the pier and started fervently praying to his beloved St. Nicholas. Then he saw a boat coming. It docked, the captain grumbled aloud, and a sailor unloaded a bag of mail. It turns out they forgot the outgoing mail from Mt. Athos and the boat had to make an additional trip. The captain looked at the Russian monk:

“To Athos?”

“To Athos!”

“Take a seat!”

The mouths of the Greeks on the dock hung open.

Fr. Iliodor made it to the All-Night Vigil, in the morning he prayed at the Liturgy, he managed to do everything he had planned, and early Monday morning, he was already back at Optina.

How my friend traveled across the steppe

I have a friend, Dmitry Schukin. We’ve been friends for a long time. He used to run a car-shipping business from Japan, but not anymore. He’s a very ascetic, unpretentious man. He doesn’t need much. He usually greets people saying:

“Peace to you, brother! Have a blessed day!”

Many years ago, a very young Dmitry took a bike ride all around the Volgograd Province, through the steppes. He was going from one residential area to another, and decided to shorten the path—not along the highway, but along an old country road. He had some food and water with him.

The road was old, completely deserted. Suddenly his tire went flat. It couldn’t be fixed, and he had no spare parts. And his backpack was heavy on the back of his bike. He decided to set up his tent. It was hot, so he drank some water and had some sandwiches.

Then a storm started, with strong wind and rain, and he was sitting there in his little tent, praying to St. Nicholas to get him out of this situation.

Suddenly he heard a car coming through the rain. He crawled out of his tent, waving his arms, and a big, off-road SUV stopped. The driver and another man got out, shocked to see anyone out there. It was twenty miles to the nearest housing.

It turned out they were electricians. The storm damaged the power line and they were going out to fix it. They rarely drove along this road—no one had been on it in a long time.

Since then, Dmitry has been more cautious with his trips, always taking a supply of water and food with him, and he still prays to St. Nicholas like he did that day.

How my friend went to Bari

My friend Dmitry really loves to go on pilgrimage to holy places. Here’s a story he told me.

One time he was driving to St. Nicholas’ relics in Bari. He had already reached the city when his engine broke down. It was pretty serious. The mechanics said it would cost 700 euros.2

Dmitry didn’t have that much money. At first he was very worried, but then he prayed to St. Nicholas in the cathedral. When he finished, he walked out, sat down on the steps, and he felt the anxiety was gone. He felt a lightness and calmness in his soul.

He sat rejoicing—after all, he’d made it to Bari, anyway!

Suddenly an unknown pilgrim came up to him, handed him some money folded up in a piece of paper, told him her name, asked for prayers, and left.

He unfolded the piece of paper—there was exactly 700 euros.

How my friend traveled to Crimea

Dmitry used to roam around to holy sites by bike, then motorcycle, and now in a car someone gave him. And this isn’t even the first car he’s been given. He already gave away the previous two to different priests. He easily gives and receives gifts.

My friend DmitrySometimes I can’t help but wonder what’s going on—why doesn’t anyone give us a car?! Or even a bike… But he gets cars… What can you say? Apparently, the Lord knows better who needs what.

So, one time Dmitry was driving around to the holy places in Crimea in this gifted car. He got out at a certain spot and decided to go for a swim. His car wasn’t a bad car, and he left all his stuff there: his telephone, his charger, his money. On the dashboard was an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

There was another, also pretty nice car parked nearby, with a super-modern alarm system. The car was closed, the windows were up, and the driver rechecked everything several times. You have to be careful, they say.

As usual, Dima read a prayer to St. Nicholas and closed the car door, even leaving the windows open a bit.

He was swimming and having a good time when suddenly he heard the other man groaning and gasping, calling the police. It turns out, despite the alarm system, his car was broken into and everything of value was stolen. And Dima’s car right next to it, with its windows open, was left untouched.

The man said to him:

“How is this possible?!”

And Dima said:

“St. Nicholas protects my car. Can your alarm system even be compared with such protection?!”

And then he thanked the Lord for His mercy and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker for his intercession.

Holy Father Nicholas, pray to God for us!
