Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell:

Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell:

The expression, “Through the roof,” became a popular phrase which meant that something was quite astounding, exceptional, exceeding all expectations. In the corporate world its context describes sales, profit margins, or stock increases while in everyday life it can denote extraordinary personal achievements by way of grades, talent, skill, athletic ability, or merit.

Well in today’s gospel lesson, we see four very exceptional people who were so determined to bring their friend to Christ for healing, even to the point of ripping open a roof to lower their friend into the house when there was no other way in. In other words, no obstacle was too great or unsurmountable to prevent them getting their paralyzed friend to the One Who they believed could help.

The tremendous love and unselfish character of these four men for their friend is astounding. Their commitment was unbounded. Their faith was extraordinary, and their actions were, “through the roof!”

Therefore, we must ask ourselves: Do I have a lackluster “the door is blocked so I’m giving up” kind of faith or a truly zealous “through the roof to get to Christ at all costs and by any means necessary” type of faith? And if not, why not?

Fr. John
