Who were the Wise Men and What do they symbolize?
The Three Wise Men, so fleetingly mentioned in the 2nd chapter of Matthew’s gospel, are often referred to as “Magi”, which comes from an ancient Persian word: magūsh. Many scholars believe them to be Zoroastrians from the ancient Persian Empire who were educated and steeped in science and magic arts, much like the Hebrew scribes, Greek philosophers, and Latin sages. Thus, these men were experts of nature and its secrets; astrologists or astronomers who studied the stars and charts which, inevitably caused them to leave their homeland and journey by a star to the distant city of Bethlehem in search of a New Born Child Who would be a Mighty King in His Own right!
