The gifts of the Wise Men
Guided by a star, the Three Wise Men journeyed from far off Persian lands to welcome the New Born King and recognize Him as God, while the Hebrews ignored their own Messiah’s coming. In fact, King Herod went so far as to try eliminate and destroy this Child altogether!
The Magi, however, brought fitting gifts as tribute: gold, a precious metal for kings, with which they acknowledge that Jesus is the King of Kings; incense, always used in religious celebrations, to acknowledge Jesus’ divine nature; myrrh, a plant from which a resin used to produce an oil is extracted, used in both consecration and burial, symbolizes Jesus’ investiture (anointing); his consecration to the roles of both, King and High Priest, as well as prefigureing His Passion, Death, and Burial.
