“For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light.” (Proverbs 6:23)
“For the commandment is a lamp, and the law a light.” (Proverbs 6:23)
God’s Word – His Commandments and Law – is a living energy that provides illumination, insight, direction, and guidance as we actively make our pilgrimage through this dark and sinful world. Psalm 119:105 reiterates this fact by stating that, “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Our sinful, fallen world contains great darkness – and I do not mean physical darkness, but the spiritual darkness that arises from the absence of God, the True Light; the darkness of Evil. The darkness of worldly philosophies stating the “there are many roads that lead to God,” and that there is no “absolute truth.”
If this were the case, then Christ never would have said, “Follow Me;” nor would he have talked about following the “right path” and entering by the “narrow gate.”
Therefore, God’s Law (teachings) and His Commandments are meant to enlighten us and illumine our path lest we stumble, go off course, or lose our way in the same way a flashlight helps one to navigate safely at night.
Fr. John
