Everyone has heard the expression, “To err is human; to forgive, divine.”
Everyone has heard the expression, “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” It was written by poet Alexander Pope but sounds like it could have come straight from the Book of Proverbs, and it says a lot!
Forgiveness is not only a gift from God, purchased by Christ’s death upon the Cross, but is an attribute of God as well. This is why the act of forgiveness is referred to as “divine;” God-like. Yet forgiveness is also a command of God: “As the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also forgive.” (Col. 13:3)
Fr. John
