Today's Sermon in a Nutshell:

Today's Sermon in a Nutshell:

When Peter got out of the boat and walked upon the water, his eyes were fixed on Christ, but when those same eyes diverted from his Master to the storm-tossed sea, his courage sank along with his body. His fears overwhelmed his faith.

Everything having to do with the Church is designed to keep us fixed and focused on Christ and embolden our faith. The architecture of the Temple; how it is decorated and adorned; the beauty and majesty of its worship; how we offer gifts of thanksgiving; the order and structure of those services; the involvement of all our senses; the grace-filled liturgical movement, music, and iconography; the solemnity and heavenly “otherworldliness” in which we gather; the Lenten and fasting seasons which abruptly refocus our attention; confession, which turns us around and sets us back on course; and the list could go on and on.

It is all designed to keep the eyes of our wavering, teetering faith fixed and focused on Christ so we don’t succumb to the storms of temptation and sink in the mire of sin. Not to walk upon water, but to walk in the way of the Lord.

Fr. John
