Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell:
In today’s epistle to the Colossians, St. Paul likens the Christian Faith to the changing of one’s clothing: stripping off our old, sinful garments – the dirty, filthy rags of anger, wrath, malice, and slander, and girding ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and the foremost raiment, which is love, that article that binds us together in perfect harmony.
St. Paul goes on to state that we must “bear with one another and forgive one another.” The word for “bear” in the original Greek means “to endure something unpleasant or difficult.”
The Church is a body of Christ with our Lord as its head and each member is needful and necessary. We are a family with a common faith and vision, yet we are also individuals with our own personal strengths and weaknesses. We might disagree with one another over politics, literature, art, music, finances, sports teams, foods – and the list could go on. Yet, in a spirit of love, we are to be bound together and are called upon by our Lord to accept one another even amidst these differences.
This is what it means to wear or “put on” Christ.
