“Let these words sink down into your ears.” (Luke 9:44)
God has blessed us with five senses, and for a reason. They help us to be human and to navigate our world. Yet just like the fallen world we live in, are senses do not always guide us correctly. We “see” poverty, prejudice, and injustice, but we often don’t notice it. We “touch” this world via our hands and feet, yet remain aloof to pollution, expansion, and guarding its sacredness. We “smell” aromas wafting through the air but are repulsed and run away from the smells of visiting the sick in homes, hospitals, and nursing facilities. We “taste,” but over-indulge in food and drink…so much so that we waste food and forget about those who are starving and suffering with hunger. Therefore, is it any wonder that our Lord has to remind us to use our ears to hear His message?
