(Genesis 2:22-23).

“And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. (Genesis 2:22-23)

When God created Eve to be a helpmate and companion, He did not take a bone from Adam’s head because she was not meant to rule over him. Neither was she made from Adam’s feet, because she is not a slave; not someone to be despised or trodden over.
Instead, God chose to form her from Adam’s rib – designating the partnership that was meant to exist between man and wife.

Woman was meant to stand at man’s side as his helpmate in life, taking the place nearest his heart. Co-laboring together in unity, walking together, moving together, sharing in work, consoling one another in times of sorrow, rejoicing together in times of happiness and celebration; expressing love within a unique bond.

The Creator’s high ideal of this God-ordained relationship could not have been expressed in a manner more simple, clearer, or more ingenious.

Fr. John
