Today we celebrate the feast of St. Herman of Alaska - the Orthodox Church’s first saint to be canonized in North America (1970). Besides being a model of God’s love and epitomizing what it means to evangelize the Gospel through example, this Wonder-working saint is best known for his extreme humility, charitable zeal, profound acts of kindness, and devout life of prayer. For me, however, I admire his concise, yet sublime one sentence sermon which, sums up both our ministry and duty as Christians: “From this day forth, from this hour, from this very minute, let us love God above all else and strive to fulfill His holy will.”
