“…one who is dipping his hand into the bowl with Me.” (Mark 14:20)
“…one who is dipping his hand into the bowl with Me.” (Mark 14:20)
Betrayal is an intimate act and bitter experience that can shatter the world we live in. Its effects can produce a wide range of emotions: fury, resentment, heartbreak, numbness, humiliation, rejection, hurt, and insecurity. We have all experienced betrayal in one form or another, but in Christ’s case, Judas’ betrayal inaugurated our Lord’s Passion: His arrest, trial, being beaten, scourged, mocked, as well as His suffering and death upon the Cross.
Although most Christians would be quick to exclaim, “I would never betray Christ as Judas did,” few would be willing to admit they routinely betray Jesus as intimately by neglecting to honor, worship, praise, and thank Him through prayer, the reading of His Word, or simply by adhering to and living by His Commandments.
How often do we “dip our hand” into the Master’s bowl, His world, and NOT do what’s right? If we don’t do what’s right, we’re doing what’s wrong; and when we act against Christ while calling ourselves Christians, that is betrayal.
Fr. John
