“Bondservant of Christ” (Ephesians 6:6)
“Bondservant of Christ” (Ephesians 6:6)
Many translators will equate a bondservant as a slave, yet the Greek word used is doulos, which means “one who is subservient to, and entirely at the disposal of, his master – but voluntarily.” Thus, many prominent men in the Bible, such as Abraham, Joshua, David, and Isaiah were called “servants of God,” as well as James, Peter, Timothy, Paul, and Jude. And in each of these instances, the term “servant” carries with it the idea of humble nobility, for being a servant of God is an honorable position, to say the least.
Fr. John
