Today the Church commemorates the Icon of Christ ......
Today the Church commemorates the Icon of Christ “Not Made by Hands,” also commonly known as the “Holy Napkin,” the “Mandylion,” or the “Holy Image.” According to oral tradition Prince Abgar of Edessa was sick and sent a servant to ask our Lord to come and heal him. However, unable to detour from His missionary work, Christ simply washed and wiped His face with a towel which left an imprint or “image” of Jesus’ likeness. Our Lord instructed the servant to take the towel back to Abgar who, having venerated it, was immediately healed. Thus, this miraculous image is known as the first icon of Christ.
Fr. John
