“…burning coals upon his head.”
“…burning coals upon his head.”
According to Jesus, we are to treat our enemies with kindness and generosity, indeed one of the great paradoxical gospel “truths” that are often hard to comprehend in a fallen world.
St. Paul reiterates this in his epistle to the Romans (12:20) by quoting from Proverbs 25:21-22, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”
The expression “heaping burning coals on someone’s head” meant that if one were to show extreme kindness and love towards an enemy, they would feel ashamed, regret their actions, and repent, because love destroys hate.
Fr. John
