Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell:
Sunday of Zacchaeus
During Christ’s time, Tax Collectors were oftentimes considered the very worst of the worst by devout Jews. They had power and wealth, but were notoriously deceitful, guided by avarice, and more often than not, took advantage of their position to exploit people for personal gain. Today’s gospel reminds us that Zacchaeus was “a chief tax collector and rich” (Luke 19:2); thus, he was the embodiment of everything the Jews despised, bearing responsibility for the deeds of all the tax collectors under him, and yet, this gospel is one of hope. For just as Zacchaeus in his desire to see Christ made the special effort by climbing a tree, our Lord saw Zacchaeus and made the effort to enter his home and dine there. We do not know all the details of Jesus’ visit, nor do we need to, but one thing is certain; after Zacchaeus met Jesus, he was a changed man.
