“I do not seek my own glory…” (John 8:50)

Christ is Risen!

“I do not seek my own glory…” (John 8:50)

Seeking glory can be highly motivating; yet whether that glory is a quest to honor and glorify God, or simply a personal desire for admiration is the question.

In a certain sense, we were created for glory, as we were created in the image and likeness of God so that we might strive to become “like God” (theosis); to know the greatness of His holiness and stand in awe of it as we conduct our lives according to His will; obeying His Commandments and abiding in His love.

However, from that first sin of pride in the Garden of Eden, Creation has fallen, and with it evil has tainted and deformed our world and confused man’s ways of thinking. Our focus has shifted from God towards self, setting in motion our own desire for glory, power, riches, and fame; seeking the personal elevation of “self-godlikeness” instead of truly seeking to be like God, which honors God.

Part of Christ’s ministry was to set things right, to restore order. Thus, our Lord addressed the issue of glory and greatness by giving us the examples of “doing unto others,” showing Himself as a servant by washing His disciples’ feet, and showing love to all – even those who were considered grievously sinful, untouchable, worthless, and demonized by others.

True greatness and glory are found by humbly submitting oneself to God’s will, and by loving and serving God by loving and serving those around us.

Fr. John
