Frankincense, the sweet-smelling, aromatic resin from the Boswellia tree, is in danger as demand increases. This is because the older trees are weakening from being over-tapped (the resin runs from cuts made to the bark much like maple sap) and, because of land value, not enough new trees are being planted.
Frankincense, which is mainly produced in Ethiopia, Somalia, the Arab Peninsula, and India, was one of the gifts presented to Jesus by the Magi and also used as incense - a "sweet, spiritual offering" - in many Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches during their services.
Fr. John
