“So rend your heart, and not your garments.” (Joel 2:13)
“So rend your heart, and not your garments.” (Joel 2:13)
During Old Testament times, it was common for the Hebrews to make a tear in their garments or rip clothing to express deep sorrow or sadness either over something they had done or was done to them. This, of course, included sinful acts which separated the individual from God and His Law.
Christ, however, desires not a simple outward act or overt show of repentance, but a true, sincere sign of repentance by tearing or “rending” of one’s heart.
Fr. John
