Today’s Sermon in a Nutshell: “Seeking Christ in times of despair”
We have all heard the expression: “Desperate times call for desperate measures.” Well in today’s Gospel we see two examples of very desperate people who received miraculous healing because they turned to Christ in faith. One was the woman who was cured of her hemorrhage by courageously pushing her way through a great, jostling crowd to touch the hem of Jesus’s robe, and the other was Jairus, who left his dying daughter’s bedside to go and find Jesus and beg Him for help.
It must be remembered that although these two individuals were desperate, they never disparaged; they had faith. In other words, their respective miracles did not occur because they perceived Christ as a “last resort,” but rather, because they viewed Him as their “only hope;” even if their faith was not perfect.
A French philosopher once said: “The greatest crime is to do nothing because we fear we can only do a little.” Yet Christ told us, that having even a little bit of faith could bring about great works. Thus, miracles typically occur when our little faith encounters a great God.
Fr. John
