Today's Sermon in a Nutshell:

Today's Sermon in a Nutshell:

The object lesson of today’s gospel is not so much about a miraculous healing, but a lesson in faith. When a man comes to Jesus and asks our Lord to heal his son, Jesus says, “Do you believe I am able to do this for you?” To this the man makes a very candid and honest response: “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24)

In its own way, this profession of faith is quite touching and sincere, even if it seems somewhat pitiful and weak. It was a declaration issued in humility, expressing his struggle to maintain faith, while at the same time desiring it. And Jesus accepted it for what it was worth and healed the man’s son.

This man’s faith was far from perfect, let alone complete. Yet what made the difference is that he “wanted” to believe, which was enough to satisfy our Savior. Asking Christ to strengthen his faith made all the difference, for the power of faith is not in faith itself, but in the one in Whom we place our faith.

Fr. John
