“And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma…” (Genesis 8:21)
The fragrant or soothing aroma of burnt sacrifices is mentioned throughout both, the Old and New Testaments, but the very first depiction of God smelling the aroma of a burnt offering is found in Genesis 8:21, when Noah offered a burnt offering of clean animals and birds after leaving the ark.
We are told that it was a “pleasing” aroma to God because the importance of a sacrifices’ aroma is not the smell, but what the smell represents: worship, thanksgiving, glorification, contrition, humility, and asking God’s forgiveness for sins.
Fr. John
